A Gathering Like No Other
Gathering together Web3 enthusiasts on a Sunday morning might seem unusual, but that’s precisely what happened in Charleston, South Carolina, on October 1. NFT giants Beeple and Yuga Labs orchestrated this extraordinary event, and entry was free for those who owned Physical CryptoPunks NFTs.
Buzzing Speculation
The buzz around this gathering grew even louder when Beeple acquired the CryptoPunk #4593, reminiscent of the Joker, in August. Discussions across Discord and X (formerly known as Twitter) ignited speculations about something innovative and audacious looming on the horizon.
The Dawn of Physical CryptoPunks NFTs
That something has finally been unveiled—the release of physical edition prints of CryptoPunks. This is a groundbreaking move for one of the pioneers of digital generative art, especially with Beeple’s involvement.
Mark Your Calendars: October 26
Mark your calendars for October 26, as Yuga Labs opens a 48-hour window for the printing of pixelated faces. There are two exciting events lined up:
- Punk On Chain: Here, holders can acquire a physical version of their digital avatar for just $640.
- 10,000 On-Chain: This event assembles the entire party of punks onto a single 60-by-60 sheet, accessible to anyone with an internet connection and $500 to spare.
Natalie Stone, CryptoPunks’ general manager, sees this release as a tribute to its founding principles. “Punks pre-date the concept of an NFT and speculative framing,” she said. “They were famously free to claim with the intention of being available and accessible to all. However, the same can be said for printmaking, with its history rooted in the mission of making great works of art widely available, and in turn, more valuable through increased visibility.”
A Partnership with Avant Arte
Furthermore, this physical venture is the result of a collaboration with Avant Arte, a contemporary art marketplace with a mission to make art more accessible and affordable. Avant Arte has already established itself in the Web3 realm. Partnering with luminaries like Nina Chanel Abney and the ubiquitous NFT collector Cozomo de’ Medici.
Abigail Miller, Web3 Lead at Avant Arte, stated, “CryptoPunks is an emblem of the crypto and Web3 movement, a slice of Web3 history. Our master printmakers in London meticulously craft each print and authenticate it with both a physical and digital COA (certificate of authentication).

As a result, Yuga Labs’ decision follows a growing trend of NFT projects venturing into physical editions. Notably, in May, Jack Butcher released handmade prints of his viral Checks series in collaboration with retro printmaker Jean Robert Milant. Moreover, Damien Hirst encouraged collectors to design and print physical versions of his Spin NFTs. More recently, Dmitri Cherniak partnered with Avant Arte to release prints from his seminal Ringers series.
A Full Circle Moment for CryptoPunks NFTs
It feels like a full circle moment in the NFT world. When NFTs stormed the art scene in Spring 2021. They promised a future where art would be as easily enjoyed on screens as on white walls.
However, that future now seems more distant. Factors like steep cryptocurrency depreciation, an overflow of NFT projects, and numerous scams have cooled the initial fervor. Yuga Labs, arguably the most successful NFT project, now embraces the simple pleasure of silkscreen prints and the pragmatic reality of fiat currency.
In conclusion, Yuga Labs’ bold step into the world of physical CryptoPunks signifies a significant shift in the NFT landscape. To sum up bringing digital art closer to traditional art forms.
