- The amount of hacks in January was minimal, at around $16 million worth of crypto stolen. So, there was an increment in February with about $34.43 million worth of crypto stolen. March made it the month with the second-largest number of hacks in 2023, and it’s even close to the one in September. So, the total worth of hacks in March was around $203.33 million. There was some decrease in April as only about 90.94 worth of crypto was stolen within this period. So, there was another massive decrease, as there were only around $13 million stolen cryptocurrencies in May.
- In June, there was another massive increase in crypto hacks, bringing the value to $93.14. There was even more increase in July, with around $165.3 million of cryptocurrencies stolen. So, there was another decrease in August as cybercriminals managed to take about $17 million worth of crypto. September is currently the highest and by a wide margin. So, there was $355.91 worth of crypto stolen in September.
Top 10 Crypto Hacks in September
- PeckShieldAlert also made a top 10 rankings of the crypto hacks that happened within the month of August. So, it was a combination of institutional and individual hacks. The one from institutions took the lead, with more than $200 million taken by hackers.
- The hack against Mixin Network was the largest in the month of September, with around $200 million. Following suit was Coin.fx, with about $74 million worth of crypto stolen. So, the third largest hack was Stake.com, with $41 million worth of cryptocurrencies. The fourth was Whale Phishing, and the fifth was Fortress, with around $24.3 and $15 million worth of hacks, respectively.
- The sixth crypto hack here was that of the newly launched HTX Exchange, with around $8 million stolen. So, the seventh here is Remitano hack of $2.7 million, and the eighth was Mark Cuban at about $0.87 million. GMBL took the 9th position, and Vitalik Buterin took the 10th position at $0.82 and $0.7 million, respectively.
