Popular Nigerian Afro beat and Hip Hop Artist, Davido caused a social media buzz after he tweeted about Bitcoin to his 8.8 million followers.
Davido Deal with Bitsika
The short tweet made the Nigerian one of the latest African stars to promote crypto after Senegal’s Akon who has been touting cryptos for about three years now. Before the tweet, Akon had revealed back in October that he had signed a deal with Bitsika, a Ghanaian, crypto payment firm. The deal had Davido promoting their trading app and his influence reportedly led to a surge of traffic to the Bitsika platform.
Crypto players in Africa’s most populous country also expect the music star’s tweet to give a boost to the country’s digital space. Naijacryptos CEO Chiagozie Iwu agrees that Davido’s tweet could drive some traffic towards crypto in Nigeria. The CEO also believes that the music star has seen a growing interest in crypto among Nigerians and that according to Iwu probably prompted his tweet.
Davido tweet more impactful than crypto influencers
Iwu sees Davido’s tweet will do more for Bitcoin than Nigeria’s crypto influencers,” Crypto influencers in Nigeria has max 40,000 followers while Davido has millions of followers on different channels”. According to the Naijacryptos boss, more people are likely to see or hear about Bitcoin from “mainstream figures” than regular crypto influencers.
Davido’s tweets drew many reactions from his millions of followers. Some plugged in their crypto credentials while others appeared ignorant. The Nigerian music star is another popular person likely to move the crypto markets because of the sheer amount of followers they have. Elon Musk is in the same ilk, whose tweets have recently played a part in moving markets. It remains to be seen the kind of effect celebrities have on the crypto markets.
