The patent explores how NFTs can be played with and transferred between games, allowing players to reap benefits across multiple platforms. According to the patent, current systems lack the technological capacity to enable the use of assets across different games and platforms.
Enhancing Gaming Experience with NFTs
The proposed system by Sony suggests that NFTs could be used to provide specific benefits to select players. A possible scenario, where the first player reaching a specific milestone or the first 5 gamers reaching a specific milestone in a game could be rewarded with a special NFT granting a unique reward such as an accessory or weapon.
Minting Progress and Transferring Gameplay with NFTs
Sony’s patent also highlights the possibility of minting certain levels, scores, or points accumulation in video games as NFTs. This progress could then be transferred or sold, allowing players to advance their gameplay through NFTs. The transferee would then begin gameplay at the same level, score, or points accumulation as the transferor.
The patent (20230079127) does not address the intrinsic benefit of having another player complete these NFT-charged gameplay segments, nor does it discuss the fundamental reason people play games: for enjoyment.
Players leasing their NFTs to others in the market could also generate revenue from these transactions. The NFT marketplace could be accessed directly from a PlayStation 5 console through its user interface. Nevertheless, the patent primarily concentrates on essential systems and executables that enable players and live stream viewers to rent NFTs on a gaming console.
