NFTs are being used to serve digital summons as part of the court system’s adoption of blockchain technology.
First NFT Court Summon In Italy
A former employee and a contractor have received court summons from RBB Lab, a technological development company based in the Republic of San Marino, using nonfungible token (NFT) technology.
Enrico Rubboli, the CEO of RBB Lab, said that the company had called the two people to appear before the Italian judiciary on charges of aggravated defamation of the company and attempted extortion. He explained that the summon was done to warn the two against defaming the company.
An NFT is being utilized for the first time in Italy to deliver a summon to court. Future changes to Italy’s legal system may result if this technology gains traction. According to the RBB team, serving summons using the blockchain is faster than the conventional method, which can take weeks.
According to Rubboli, “The goal is to streamline the process and make it more efficient.” He added that his company wanted to improve efficiency through technology.
“As a technology company, we want to push barriers in everything we do. This is an example where technology can facilitate and also improve a system that has been slow to adapt. Our goal is to find opportunities to improve our lives using technology. Unfortunately, the legal system has many examples of inefficiency where a lot can be done.”
Advent Of New Legal Products
RBB Lab is collaborating with the Florence, Italy-based law firm Annetta Rossi e Associati to create a collection of tools for the legal industry. New legal products related to blockchain are being developed with the intention of being used by both lawyers and law students. Although the initiative is still in its infancy, the team is already making excellent progress.
Rubboli explained the partnership Annetta Rossi by saying that the firm can help them bring a variety of products such as on-forensic tools to the market. He added that they were also exploring the possibility of notarizing documents using the blockchain.
Contrary to popular belief, more and more people are using NFTs to deliver court documents. In fact, two courts in the UK and the US have permitted the use of NFTs to deliver summonses in the context of a legal dispute, potentially opening the door for more widespread use.
NFT Court Cases Increasing
The number of court cases associated with NFTs has significantly increased over the past several years as more and more people have started utilizing NFTs. One of the most recent ones was the use of an NFT by a law company to deliver a temporary restraining order to the defendant.
Although employing NFTs to deliver a court summons has many benefits, there are also legal constraints that must be followed. According to Pietro Calvaruso from RBB Labs’ legal team a lack of familiarity to blockchain technology.
In addition to using NFTs to serve court documents, some businesses use them to combat fake goods. Employing NFTs enables businesses to utilize blockchain technology to confirm that a digital object is native, unique, and unprotected by copyright.
This technology makes them indestructible and easily verifiable. In addition, it can be used to transfer royalties and fees to the creator through the use of smart contracts. As a result, media firms can now link their distinctive content to NFTs and use this technology to give their customers a distinctive experience.
