Bitcoin is the apex cryptocurrency and has the characteristics of anonymity. However, people from time to time always try to abuse this feature by engaging in crime. So, this was the case of a doctor trying to murder his girlfriend by paying in Bitcoin to hide his identity.
Doctor Uses Bitcoin to Hire a Hitman
- There was a crazy story of how a doctor and a hitman made a deal with Bitcoin serving as a model of payment. So, Dr. James Wan, a Georgia-based physician, entered a guilty plea for using Bitcoin to organize a murder plot. The intention of this doctor was to kill his girlfriend. However, the use of Bitcoin in this deal was to help cover up his actions with regard to payment.
- The plan was to use the pseudonymous nature of Bitcoin to hire a hitman. So, the job of this hitman was to make it look like his girlfriend died in an extreme carjacking activity. However, things didn’t go well for this doctor, as he is now awaiting sentencing before a federal court in January 2024.
How Did This Event Happen?
- The whole issue of a doctor wanting to hire a hitman to kill his girlfriend has its origins in 2022. So, this doctor meticulously arranged for his girlfriend’s murder by providing extensive details. Some of the information from this doctor to the hitman was his girlfriend’s Facebook account and her vehicle’s description
- This type of contract was quite massive, with around $24,200 for the hitman. So, the issue here was that Wan made a payment to the wrong address, leading to the FBI catching up with his intentions. After sending around $8,000 Bitcoin to the wrong wallet, Wan had to make another payment of the same amount to escrow. However, this is where he didn’t have patience. So, he sent several reckless messages over the dark web.
- Some of his messages and questions on the dark web forum are: “How soon should work be done? I have submitted an Order and curious how quickly it should be carried out? Is there a way I can find out any progress? Is there anyone in my location?”
FBI Catches Doctor Despite Using Bitcoin
- The FBI office of Atlanta was quick to notice the ongoing plot by this doctor with Bitcoin. So, according to Keri Farley, Special Agent in Charge of FBI Atlanta, the doctor will face the charges against him. Despite trying to conceal his identity with Bitcoin payments, it didn’t work out.
- In conclusion, this is not the first time people will be using Bitcoin to make payments for the murder of their loved ones. So, there was this story of an Italian man paying around $12,000 in cryptocurrency for an assault on his ex-girlfriend. On the other hand, a Utah man paid $16,000 in Bitcoin for a double murder.
